Wellness and Preventions Services serves all App State students through the promotion of healthy behaviors, risk behavior modification services and advocacy for campus-wide health policies that facilitate student success and holistic well-being. We offer services promoting health awareness and active lifestyles while taking a holistic approach to wellness.

We offer services promoting health awareness and active lifestyles while taking a holistic approach to wellness, encompassing the following eight dimensions.

Emotional Wellness

Emotional Wellness provides you the opportunity to have a deeper understanding of self. What is it that excites you and motivates you? How do you manage stressful situations and deal with conflict? Emotionally well individuals have the ability to be resilient in the face of adversity and to seek assistance from others.

  • Engage in reflection regarding personal experiences
  • Create a process and plan for navigating stress
  • Identify support systems for celebrating successes and assisting with setbacks

Environmental Wellness

Environmental Wellness involves the interaction and preservation of the physical environment that surrounds us. It provides us the opportunity to connect with nature in a manner that promotes understanding.

A Mountaineer’s Plan for Environmental Wellness

  • Recognize and engage the natural beauty of Boone and the High Country of North Carolina
  • Learn about the diverse plant and animal species present in Western North Carolina
  • Minimize adverse environmental impact through recycling, alternative forms of transportation, and a pursuit of more sustainable ways to engage in activities of daily living

Financial Wellness provides you the opportunity to manage money in a way that increases financial security.

Students will learn the following regarding their financial wellness:

Occupational Wellness

Occupational Wellness first involves the exploration of various career options that best align with your individual talents. Also, it is the ability to maintain a balance between work life and personal life as well as the ability to manage stress in the workplace.

A Mountaineer’s Plan for Occupational Wellness

  • Pursue employment that satisfies a variety of needs, such as financial, spiritual, and social
  • Seek opportunities to make long-lasting contributions within the local place of employment and within the broader profession
  • Protect non-work time and attend to other needs such as physical and/or social well-being

Physical Wellness

Physical Wellness involves the continuous maintenance of and care for the body. This involves nutrition, physical activity, and sleeping habits that will enable the body to function at optimal condition.

A Mountaineer’s Plan for Physical Wellness

  • Recharge utilizing naps and dedicated time at night to get sufficient sleep
  • Think wisely about the use of substances such as tobacco and alcohol
  • Establish and maintain positive behaviors regarding physical activity, nutrition, and sexual health

Social Wellness includes your ability to interact and engage with others as a means to establish healthy relationships. It is through our social well-being that we are able to employ effective communication skills and create support systems.
